I was on a 10 day journey, visiting 4 State Parks and some very good friends along the way. At the last minute I changed my route and found myself coming up on El Campo, Texas.

I have worked for more than a couple of decades with a co-worker from El Campo. I pulled over and texted him, asking him for a restaurant recommendation (I'd been eating out of my ice chest for the past week; time for some pampering). He gave me a couple of ideas but emphasized Emil's as it had been a boyhood favorite. What the heck, give it a try.

First thing I encountered were two friendly faces sitting out in front of the restaurant. I asked if this was a good place to eat - "Yes Sir, very good." I didn't let the fact they both worked there dissuade me (I didn't know tht when I asked).  I went in.

Old time country cafe. My best description. Friendly people with a positive attitude. After 2,000 + miles on the road, a welcome relief.

What I know is, the burger was perfect. I've been so lucky to find outstanding burger joints recently. I'd put this right up in the top 2 or 3.

Pattie Melt was the special of the day ... if I didn't have my heart set on a burger I would have given it a try. Someone else ordered the special and it looked fantastic.

Emil's - not easy to find. Put it in you GPS and let it guide you to good burgers and excellent fries.

This place was a treat for me. The menu is larger than l expected it to be. The burger was exceptional. The service is very good and the staff are friendly. Thankful to young man at BW that recommended this establishment.

The best burgers in town! Always juicy & delicious! Great fries and other sides. When it's cold and I want chili I know I can always get a great bowl of hot steaming chili. We've been going to Emil's for over 35years and love the atmosphere!

Emil's ("AA-melz") is a typical Southern Gulf Coast burger place.  The burgers are classics, medium size, with usual lettuce, tomato, dill pickle, mayo & +/- mustard; will be made to your specs on order.  Just had one tonight.

Consistent quality over decades, friendly service, plenty parking.  "Rustic" digs, small-town casual, unassuming "old-time" REAL Americana qualities.

New owners await bar license, so for now, it is BYO Beer.   Bring a couple extra cold ones for the nice workers.

Good solid value, no surprises, peculiar hours of operation.  I suggest one call 979-541-5525, to make sure they are open.

Don't miss this anachronistic Southern "treat"!

    Rick
